1. After the earthquake, the city's infrastructure was damaged--there was no power, the streets were all broken up, and the water system was destroyed.

widespread

 Problems, such as poverty and homelessness, are a widespread problem in big cities in the US. It's very common.

The widespread use of harmful chemicals is damaging the environment. These chemicals are used all over the country.

confine

The prisoner was confined to his small cell (room in the prison). He wasn't allowed to leave.

confer

The manager and his workers conferred about the problem.

Let's confer about this for a minute.

 Harry liked Jane.  Fortunately, the feeling was mutual.  She liked him too.

In this class, we need to have mutual respect.  This means we all respect each other.

regulate

The government regulates the sale of cigarettes.  They make sure that no one under 18 years old can buy them.


The sale of guns should be better regulated.  For instance, crazy people and criminals shouldn't be allowed to buy them.

A close look at this the fabric of your shirt reveals tiny hairs.

The scientists studied how animals communicate.  Their research revealed that animals are similar to people.

evident

It is evident that water will freeze if it gets too cold.  We've seen this many times.

 It is evident that you did not study for the test.  Look at your low score!

previous

John was excited to be in Level 4.  The previous semester had been difficult, but fortunately he passed his Level 3 classes.

 The company made 1.5 million dollars in 2012.  This was much better than the previous year.  It only made 1.2 million dollars in 2011.

process

The process of breathing has a few main steps.  First, you breath in oxygen.  Then, inside your body, the oxygen helps break down the sugar. Finally, you breath out carbon dioxide and water.
